Hayden
Civil War Bodyguard
Cork, Ireland to Lyon County, Kentucky
Your Hayden family immigrated from Ireland according to the 1880 Federal Census for William Haden in Eddyville, Lyon County, Kentucky. They are first recorded in this country as living in Maryland before migrating to Virginia, then to Eddyville, Kentucky.
Your 3x great grandfather, William Edward (1844-1922), was born in Jackson County, Virginia. In the 1850 Federal Census for Cincinnati, Hamilton County, Ohio, William, his brother, Edgar, and step brother and sister, James and Helen Hayes are living with their mother who is listed as the head of household. A right aged William Hayden also shows up in Cincinnati as a carpenter, working construction, but living with the Hendy family.
The Hendy family may have had a boarding house. There are 11 young people living in the household in addition to the Hendy family of 9, all from Ireland.
Sarah – “Good looking and died at a ripe old age”
Your 4x great grandmother, Sarah LeMaster, first married James William Hayes, Sr. and together they had two children, James Hayes (b.1836) and Helen Hayes (b.1840). In 1842, Sarah married a second time to (probably) William E Hayden from Ireland. Sarah and William had two children – William Edward (1844) and Edgar (1848). William Edward was born in Virginia, but Edgar was born in Ohio. This tells us that the family probably migrated from Jackson County, Virgina, between 1844 and 1847.
According to a letter written by Frieda Ellen Hayes McKinney, granddaughter of James William Hayes, Jr., half-brother to our William Edward, Sr., Sarah had multiple marriages. Frieda writes, “Grandma Reese was a leMasters, then marries Hayes, Hayden, Kadel/Cadel, Carrell, and Reece. Then ran around with Dr. Watts of Gallipolia, Ohio, which was only 7 miles from … Gallia County. She was good looking and died at a ripe old age.”
William Edward Sr. in Lyon County, Kentucky
Following his term of service during the Civil War, William migrated to Lyon County where he married Mary Ann “Polly” Wheatley (1845-1929). Together, they had eight children – 5 girls and 3 boys.
One of the boys, William Edward, Jr., married Mayme (Mary Isabelle) Cannon. We are connected to the Hayden family through Mary Rowena Hayden Dunn, our grandmother. Rowena is one of 5 children of Ed and Mayme.
